Top 8 Nar Phu Valley Itineraries: Trekking, Horse Riding & Wellness

Barren, brown, towering Yongmoso Hill with the Nar River flowing at its base in the Nar Phu Region.

Do you want to avoid crowded trails and trek in the hidden region of Nepal? If so, welcome to Nar Phu Valley.

Nar Phu Valley is one of the remote areas of Nepal, tucked between the majestic Himalayan ranges. Its rugged, barren landscapes and striking rocky formations gives it an alien-like appearance (think Mars). Yet amidst this scenery, you will encounter remnants of ancient Himalayan Buddhist culture, which makes trekkers feel like they have stepped back a thousand years.

On this page, we have listed the 8 most preferred itineraries to explore Nar Phu Valley. As the valley doesn’t have road access, all these routes include either walking on foot or riding a horse.

Our trekking programs differ in terms of trekking hours each day, difficulty levels, activities, and routes. This gives you more options to choose the plan that matches your interests and fitness level.

The 8 different Nar Phu Valley trip programs selected by our expert local trekking guides are as follows:

Nar Phu Valley Classic Trek – 13 Days

The Nar Phu classic route is chosen by over 70% of people trekking in this region. For most of our guests too, we suggest this same route. This plan ensures proper acclimatization, comfortable pacing and rest during the trek. It also covers the major highlights of the region, including Himlung Base Camp, Pangri Glacier, and Tashi Lhakhang Monastery.

Day 13 Depart and Goodbye.

The trekking option is considered moderately challenging. It includes a total of 81 kilometers of walking over 7 days. The trail is mostly a gradual ascent after 3,600 meters, except for a few sections. The steepest climb and descent is during Kang La Pass, and it requires strong and careful footing.

Accommodation is clean but basic in the trekking region. You will stay in tea houses, and we recommend bringing a sleeping bag for better hygiene. Also, we don’t recommend eating meat as it can cause digestion issues. Vegetarian and gluten-free foods are available as per your preference.

Cost & Inclusions

The trek cost varies based on the number of pax:

Group SizePrice Per Person (USD)
2 Pax830
3 to 5 Pax760

Accommodation, transportation, guide, and restricted area permit are included in the given amount. Meanwhile, food is not included so that you can choose what you want to eat for each meal.

Nar Phu Valley is an adventure into an unspoiled world.

Nar Phu + Annapurna Circuit Trek with Tilicho Lake

This trekking option brings together the two major himalayan routes: Nar Phu Valley with the Annapurna Circuit. We highly recommend this program if you have more than 2 weeks to explore the Annapurna region.

Similar to the Nar Phu Valley trek, it also allows enough time for acclimatization with a non-rushed pace. The additional highlights of this trek include Blue Lake, Tilicho Lake (one of the world’s highest glacier lakes), and Thorong La Pass.

Daily Itinerary Breakdown

The 16-day combined Nar Phu Valley & Annapurna Circuit trekking day-to-day schedule includes:

Day Route
Day 1 Drive to Besisahar from Kathmandu (8-hour drive)
Day 2 Drive to Thanchowk Village from Besisahar (4.5-hour drive). Trek to Koto Village from Thanchowk (1.5-hour walk).
Day 3 Trek to Meta Village from Koto (7-hour walk).

Day 15 Drive from Muktinath to Pokhara (7-hour drive).
Day 16 Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu (7-hour drive).

It is around 163 km of trekking within 13 days. This combined trekking option requires more stamina and endurance than the classic Nar Phu Valley trek, as trekkers have to walk continuously for more days. For participants who have physically trained at least 10 weeks before the trek, we classify this trek as moderately challenging.

Once you have completed the Nar Phu Valley trek, your body has already adapted to continuous high-altitude walking. So, we did not keep an extra acclimatization day in the Annapurna region.

Accommodation in lower-altitude regions such as Koto, Ngawal, and Manang has more facilities (WiFi, more food options). In higher-altitude regions such as Phu, Nar, and Yak Kharka, they are basic. Nevertheless, our guide will ensure you get the best available facilities even in high-altitude villages.

Cost & Inclusions

The trek cost varies based on the number of pax:

Group SizePrice Per Person (USD)
2 Pax950
3 to 5 Pax850
6 to 8 Pax715
9 to 12 Pax680

Accommodation, transportation, guide, and restricted area permit are included in the given amount.

We have not included the food price in the above cost, as we do not want to limit you to pre-selected menu items. This gives you the freedom to choose what you want to eat for each meal.

Annapurna circuit trek changed how I see myself. Stronger, calmer, and more appreciative of simple things.

Nar Phu Valley Short Trek – 8 Days

This itinerary is designed for experienced trekkers who have about a week of trekking time in the Himalayas. It minimizes both driving and trekking days. We drive directly from Kathmandu to Koto and skip the visit to Himlung Base Camp and Tashi Lhakhang Monastery (acclimatization day). For many trekkers, this schedule can feel hectic and rushed.

Our mountain guides recommend this trekking plan only to people who have already completed high-altitude treks at least three times, can walk continuously for long days, and have only a few days available for trekking.

Furthermore, this option is only feasible during clear weather and the best season. There is a chance the trail may get blocked if it rains or snows heavily, which will require extra buffer days.

Easy-Pace Nar Phu Valley Trek

Our experienced trek guide recommended this 13-day itinerary with comfort and immersion as the focus.

This plan reduces strain in your legs because, unlike other treks, you have to only walk for 4 hours on most days. Also, it ensures the best acclimatization possible since the itinerary keeps a mostly gradual trail . This means even a beginner trekker who had a limited time for training can complete Nar Phu Valley trek with this plan.

What’s another best thing about the easy-pace itinerary? Time to explore. After reaching each village, you’ll have enough time to roam around the village, interact with locals, visit historical sites, and soak in the rugged topography and Buddhist culture of each village. If you’re a cultural and historical enthusiast, this plan may be perfect for you.

While trekking in Nar Phu, I became deeply aware of my own breathing … my boots crunching on gravel … solitude in its purest form.

Horse Riding in Nar Phu Valley – 10 Days

Discover Himalayas in a way few travelers ever experience: on horseback! This is a unique itinerary as 85% of the route involves horseback riding in the Nar Phu Valley. We are proud to be the first local trekking operator in Nepal providing horse riding services in this region.

This method of exploring the Himalayas is suitable for

  • Pro horse riders: You can ride independently with our horse escorts leading the way on narrow paths and helping with navigation.
  • Beginner riders: No experience? No problem! Our certified guide and local escorts will supervise you, teach you the basics, and support you on narrow trails. (yes, you can do it!)
  • Travelers seeking minimal walking: Most sections are completed on horseback.

Daily Itinerary Breakdown

The 10-day Nar Phu Valley equestrian program includes:

Day 9 Drive to Besisahar from Ngawal (7-hour drive)

The route includes 81 km of uneven terrain over 6 horse riding days. As most of the sections are traversed on horse back, riders do not have to worry about tiredness or difficulty. However, beginners may feel back strain from continuous riding.

Additionally, riders need to dismount in the steep descent sections of the trail, as horses cannot maintain their balance while going downhill. For our route, Kang La Pass is the notable one. You’ll have to leave your horse in Kang La Pass (5,320 m) and descend 6.8 kilometers to Ngawal (3,650 m) on foot.

The trek cost varies based on the number of pax:

Nar Phu Valley + Manaslu Circuit Trek – 20 Days

This itinerary combines trekking in two remote and restricted regions of Nepal: Manaslu and Nar Phu Valley. This trek is ideal if you’re comfortable with nearly three weeks of continuous hiking in secluded Himalayan areas with basic facilities. For most trekkers, this trekking route is a bit long.

This expedition option brings you the best of both Manaslu Valley and Nar Phu Valley. The main highlight is standing face-to-face with Manaslu Peak (8,163 m), the eighth-highest mountain on Earth. You will also have the opportunity to cross two high mountain passes: Kang La Pass (5,320 m) and Larkya La Pass (5,106 m), all while experiencing remote Buddhist culture.

The trek ensures proper acclimatization. Our experienced and certified guide will help you maintain a steady pace, avoid rushing, and take proper precautions to minimize health risks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is Nar Phu Valley located?

Nar Phu Valley lies in the northern Manang district of Nepal at an altitude over 3,400 meters. It is located beyond Pisang Peak and is surrounded by other mountains such as Kang Guru, Gyaji Kang, Himlung, Nemjung, and Ratna Chuli.

Why is Nar Phu Valley considered a hidden gem for trekking?

Nar Phu region is called a hidden gem because fewer than 10% of trekkers walk in this trail compared to the popular Annapurna Circuit. This means the trails are quieter, less commercialized and offer raw Himalayan beauty: rugged landscapes, towering highlands, snow-capped mountains, and dramatic rocky trails.

What makes Nar Phu Valley different from other trekking destinations in Nepal?

Nar Phu Valley is more rugged, remote, wild, and culturally rich compared to other trekking destinations, with centuries-old architecture and cultural remnants preserved in its villages.

Is Nar Phu Valley a restricted area?

Yes, Nar Phu Valley has been categorized as a restricted region by the Government of Nepal because it borders Tibet and is also a sensitive place (culturally and naturally).

Do I need a special permit to enter Nar Phu Valley?

Yes, trekkers require a Restricted Area Permit and an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit to enter this region.

What is the best season to trek in Nar Phu Valley?

The best time to trek Nar Phu Valley is during Spring and Autumn. Please note that due to climate change, the seasonal pattern has been changing as per our ground experience. Spring now typically falls between October to November while Autumn spans Med-February to May.

What are the most popular Nar Phu Valley trekking itineraries?

The two most popular Nar Phu Valley itineraries are the Nar Phu Valley Classic 13-Day program and the Nar Phu Valley with Annapurna Circuit 16-Day program.

Why is food not included in most Nar Phu Valley trek packages?

Our team has decided not to include food prices in our packages (even though it means less profit for us) because that would limit you to specific food we had chosen from the menus. Many trekkers prefer variety. Considering that, we decided it would be better for clients to pay directly at teahouses for a better dining experience.

Are permits and guides included in the trek cost?

Yes, permits and guides are included in the above-provided cost. However, porters are not included unless you book a camping trek. If you need a porter, the cost is around USD 20 per person per day.
